Women of Faith Plan for 2010

Religions for Peace Global Women of Faith Network is launching a new 2010calendar, a new North American Women of Faith Network, and continuing its Restoring Dignity Initiative to end violence against women.

The Religions for Peace Global Women of Faith Network has produced a Multi-Faith Women's Calendar for 2010, with religious holidays and inspiring quotes from women of faith, including ICJW Interfaith Chairman Nadine Iarchy, who is featured on the May page. It can be downloaded at http://religionsforpeace.org/file/resources/media/womens-interfaith-calendar.pdf

Religions for Peace is behind the Restoring Dignity Initiative to end violence against women. In 2009 over 200 individuals signed the interfaith pledge, committing their religious communities to work within and across their faiths to address violence against women and girls. Over 600 people have signed the letter to the United Nations Secretary-General urging the United Nations to engage faith communities and senior male religious leaders in efforts to end violence against women. Youth from every region are working on posters to raise awareness among their peers and in their communities on how young people are vital to ending the cycle of violence.

On November 25, 2009, for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, 300 men, women and youth observed the million minutes of meditation. Sermons and prayers were led by religious leaders and communities all over the world during the weekend of faith held from November 20-22, 2009. Survivors are sharing their stories of hope - from femicide, to domestic violence, to rape – and women and girls are surviving and supporting each other in faith.

The toolkit: Restoring Dignity: A Toolkit for Religious Communities to End Violence Against Women can be downloaded here: http://religionsforpeace.org/resources/toolkits/restoring-dignity-a-toolkit.html

The North American Women of Faith Network will launch on 1-2 March 2010, coinciding with the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. The venue for this important launch will be the International Social Justice Commission of the Salvation Army in New York City. The North American Women of Faith Network will be part of Religions for Peace Global Women of Faith Network, with regional networks spanning the continents of Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Europe and Asia Pacific.
