icjw events at csw60

ICJW will sponsor two side events at the 60th Commission on Status of Women, to be held at the UN in New York from March 14-24 2016.

The priority theme of CSW60 is “Women’s Empowerment and its Link to Sustainable Development.” Representatives of international member states, UN entities, and ECOSOC-accredited non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from all regions of the world will be attending.

Three of ICJW’s UN Representatives, Joan Lurie Goldberg, Rita Fishman, and Judy Mintz, have organised a side event entitled “Women in Politics: Successes, Failures & Challenges.” It will be co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters, ICJW, WJC, Pan Pacific and South East Asia Women’s Association (PPSEAWA), and the Israeli, Albanian and Fiji Missions to the UN.  Speakers from Fiji and Albania have been confirmed, and we hope to also include Gila Gamliel MK, Minister for Senior Citizens in the Israeli government. The event is scheduled for 1.15pm on Monday March 14, 2016, inside the UN HQ building.Click here to download the Concept Note for this event.

Also representing ICJW at the UN in New York, Madeleine Brecher and Fran Butensky have organized a second parallel event entitled: “Protect Our Girls: Sexualization, Exploitation and the Media”. This is under the CSW60 Review theme of the elimination and prevention of all forms of violence against women and girls.

The idea for the event arose from an email correspondence between the ICJW President, Robyn Lenn OAM, and the Executive concerning the depiction of girls as sexual objects and perceptions of body image in the media, and how it can lead to violence against girls. ICJW will co-sponsor this event along with the U.S. Fund for UNICEF and Together For Girls. It will take place on Wednesday, March 16, 2016, at 2:30pm at the Church Center Chapel, directly across the street from the UN at the corner of 44th Street and First Avenue.
