icjw events at csw 61

ICJW will be involved with three side events during the UN Commission on the Status of Women, which will take place in New York from March 13- 24. ICJW President Robyn Lenn will be among the ICJW delegates at this important annual gathering.

ICJW is co-sponsoring an event on safety from gender violence, together with UNICEF USA and Together for Girls. Entitled “It Starts with Safety: Adding Girls to the Global Agenda”, it will take place on Thursday, 16 March from 2:30 TO 4:00 pm at the Church Center, 777 UN Plaza, corner 44th St. and  1st Avenue in the Hardin Room.

Safety is not only a fundamental human right but a core guarantee that every girl around the world deserves. The MDGs and SDGs both made gender equality a global priority, but how can we promote gender equality if we cannot protect a girl's basic right to safely? When we fail to keep girls safe from violence, we erase the success of the MDGS and stall the progress of the SDGs. In this parallel event, we highlight the importance of protecting girls from violence, discuss what the MDGs achieved for gender equality, and share how the SDGs can echo and strengthen the MDGs in ensuring the safety of women and girls. Fran Butensky & Madeleine Brecher from ICJW were involved in planning this event.

Rita Fishman represents ICJW on the NGO Committee to Stop Trafficking in Persons, who have organized an event on Wednesday, 15 March from 10:30-12:00 at the Salvation Army Auditorium - 221 E.  52nd Street, (between 1st and 2nd Av.). Entitled “Human Trafficking and Labor: Accessorizing Our Lives at the Cost of Others”, it will look at how many of the products we consume and the clothes we wear derive from commodities sourced and linked to human trafficking.  This panel discussion will explore how daily consumption and use of such products supports human trafficking and exacerbates the plight of trafficked persons.  Becoming educated consumers offers communities the opportunity to become empowered and work together to end this human rights violation.

ICJW is also sponsoring a session on "The Business of Parliaments:  Achieving Women's Economic Empowerment and why 30% Women Representation is Important" on Tuesday, March14th at the Salvation Army Auditorium 221 E 52nd Street from 2:30 to 4:00 pm. Other sponsors include the League of Women Voters and the World Jewish Congress.
