Historic WJC Meeting in Rome

Sara Winkowski reports that the Executive Committee of the World Jewish Congress gathered in Rome on November 21-22, 2022, for a unique and milestone meeting with the Vatican.

Nostra Aetate dismantled the collective accusation of Deicide against the Jewish people, recognized the Jewish origins of the fathers of the Church and the Virgin Mary, vindicated the Old Testament and “reproved” the persecution of the Jews.

The meeting began on Monday evening at the historic Great Synagogue of Rome built in 1904, which is also includes the city´s Jewish Museum. Here you can find the historic edicts from the Middle Ages proclaiming oppressive measures against the Jews, including a variety of prohibitions designed to condemn Jews to abject misery, depriving them of the means of sustenance, and denying them the exercise of all professions. After visiting the synagogue we had dinner in the Jewish Ghetto.

The next day, we meet for our first session in the Paul VI Hall of the Vatican, where the bishops usually meet for their Synod, and we met Pope Francis in the Apostolic Palace.   After that, we had a Kosher lunch at the Vatican. This was the first time in 2000 years that a Jewish organization met for a session and had a kosher lunch at the Vatican!!

During the meeting and after several months of prior work, the WJC launched the “Kishreinu” (a Hebrew word meaning our bond) declaration, a roadmap for the future relationship between Jews and Christians, and as the Jewish answer to “Nostra Aetate”, signed at the Second  Vatican Council, which reconsidered the relations between the Catholic Church and non-Christian religious denominations, especially Judaism.

Addressing the meeting, Pope Francis said “in light of the religious heritage that we share, let us regard the present as a challenge that unites us as an incentive to act together.  Our two communities of faith are entrusted with the task of working to make the world more fraternal, combating forms of inequality and promoting greater justice, so that peace will not remain an otherworldly promise, but become a present reality in our world,”

Ambassador Ronald Lauder, President of the WJC, expressed his gratitude to the Catholic Church during a time of increased Jew-hatred worldwide. “We don’t ignore it. We don’t forget. But we look forward together. And what could possibly be better than for all the children of God to live together in peace, harmony and in the House of the Lord, forever,”

Clarifying the significance of the occasion, WJC Commissioner for Interfaith Relations Claudio Epelman said, “Hundreds of Jewish leaders from all around the world are starting a process that will change the way Jews and Christians relate and share their daily lives, in every town and city they live in. We are grateful to Pope Francis for the invaluable symbolic gesture of being our host here today, and we are confident that working together we will create a better future for everyone.”

At a time when antisemitism in its various manifestations is growing in the world, be it conspiracy theories, malicious allusions to the ‘Jewish lobby’, expressions delegitimizing the State of Israel, anti-Zionism, attacks on Jewish institutions and characters, terrorism, and the constant threats of the Iranian regime to “destroy the State of Israel”, the collaboration between the Catholic Church and the Jewish People is a beacon in the dark.

It was a very impressive meeting, A real landmark, a milestone in Jewish history. ICJW was one of the only two NGOs participating, together with delegates from over 50 countries. I want to thank ICJW for the opportunity of being part of such an historic meeting.

REUNIÓN DEL COMITÉ EJECUTIVO DEL CONGRESO JUDÍO MUNDIAL

NOVIEMBRE 21 – 22, 2022, Sara Winkowski

No olvidamos.
